An empty room with endless possibilities! Perhaps you just moved into your Boston apartment or you just had a family member move out, and now you have an extra room. Whatever the reason, first you need to decide what type of room you and your family really need: home office, art studio or even a workout room. Then you need to decide on a budget. Maybe this is going to be a work in progress that you need to spread out financially over a few months. Here are a few ideas to help you decide how to best use your spare room.

1. Home Office/Library

Just about everyone would admit that they need a home office. Even if you don’t work from home, you need a place where you can store all your paperwork and bills. Then you won’t have it spread all over your dining room table.

2. Guest Room

If you have family or friends coming to stay quite often, maybe you need a second bedroom. Do you like having company stay with you, or would you rather they stay in a hotel?

3. Kids Play Room

Kids have tons of toys! It’s a relief to have a place where their toy mess is kept. Just think how nice it would be to keep the toys in ONE place and shut the door!

4. Workout Room

Do you have a treadmill in your bedroom or living room? Do you work out regularly? Then this may be the best use of your extra room. Make yourself a workout room with your exercise equipment and a TV and/or stereo system.

5. Reading Room or Retreat

Maybe you want a quiet place that is just for you to read, meditate or just relax and watch what you want on TV.

6. Craft/Art Room

Do you make a lot of crafts? Or do you sew or paint on a regular basis. Are you tired of dragging out your supplies and then putting them away? It would be so much more convenient to have one place to keep all of your projects.

The choices are endless, and you have to decide how you can best use that extra space. If you cannot decide, some of these choices could be combined. For a home office/guest room you could have a day bed and a desk and that way you could utilize both. Or a workout room/reading room where you could workout and then read and relax! After you have decided what the best choice is for you, have fun shopping and decorating as you watch your spare room transform before your eyes!
